Calé!, a Look Back at the Career of Joaquín Cortés

Theatre 14/04/2010

Famous Spanish Flamenco dancer and choreographer Joaquín Cortés presents his latest show Calé!, a look back at his professional career. The spectacle premiered on February 14, 2010, in Barcelona's Teatro Coliseum.

Calé! takes audience goers on a journey through Joaquin Cortés's personal emotions, embodying his influences and experiences in a review of his finest professional moments from the past 17 years. This time, he has included the essence of works like Cibayí, Mi Soledad, Pasión Gitana, Soul and Live. Spurred on by the rhythm of salsa, soul, gospel and Arabic music, among others, Joaquín Cortés takes the stage surrounded by 10 dancers and 16 musicians. Part of their wardrobe was already used in another show and was created exclusively by renowned designers such as Paul Gaultier and Giorgio Armani.

In 1992, Joaquín Cortés formed his own dance company under the name "Joaquín Cortés Ballet Flamenco", with whom he staged a large number of shows. That very year he premiered his first production, Cibayí, followed by Pasión Gitana (Gypsy Passion) in 1995, Soul in 1999, Live in 2001 and Mi Soledad (My Loneliness) in 2006. Furthermore, in 1995, he debuted in the world of cinema with the film The Flower of My Secret by Pedro Almodóvar, took part in Carlos Saura's Flamenco and later, in 2000, starred in Gitano (Gypsy) by Manuel Palacios. Even videogame director Hideo Kojima used his image to create the Vamp character in the "Metal Gear Solid" saga.

At just 40 years of age, Joaquín Cortés has garnered global recognition not only for dance skills, but for being a pioneering force in rhythmic and instrumental fusion, creating a unique stamp within our country's Flamenco world.

The super-production Calé! will run up until this upcoming April 25, 2010.
