Duet for One, an Emotional Journey

Theatre 22/04/2010

Catalan director Magda Puyo is in charge of directing Ernest Riera's Catalan translation of playwright Tom Kempinksi's piece Duet for One, an emotional journey whereby music and theatre come together through multiple sclerosis.

Duet for One tells the story of Stephanie Abrahams (interpreted by Àngels Bassas), a virtuoso violinist who has everything: fame, social status, money, marriage to a famous composer. Yet she is forced to re-evaluate her life when she is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. To confront this, she seeks help in the form of Dr. Feldman (interpreted by Mingo Ràgols), who tries to help her assume her new situation via six psychological sessions, in which she faces a future without music. The play is accompanied by live music, performed by violinists Cornelia Lörcher and María Roca.

The show is inspired in the life of a young cellist, who spent her life searching passionately for beauty through music. Her artistic aspirations were thwarted when, at the age of 27, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The artist began to lose sensibility in her fingers and hands and moved further and further from the stage, the only place where life made sense.

Duet for One premiered in London in 1980, has won numerous awards and has been performed in more than fifty countries. Furthermore, the text garnered popularity thanks to a film version that premiered in 1986, directed by Serguei Konchalovsky and starring Julie Andrews in the lead role.

Duet for One (Duet per a una sola veu in Catalan), which first ran on April 18, 2010, will grace Barcelona's Teatre Romea until May 9, 2010.
